Chingeltei by-election set to be postponed |
|
|
With the Government supporting the draft changes to the Election Law promoted by both party groups in Parliament the by-election in Chingeltei is most likely to be postponed to autumn. D.Dondog who, along with fellow MP, Batj.Batbayar, prepared the draft changes, said a by-election in autumn would help many voters who would earlier be on vacation. The seat has fallen vacant following Ts. Elbegdorj’s assumption of the presidency. They also want to have some uniformity in the process of fixing the dates of all by-elections. The draft calls for the General Election Committee to propose a date for a by-election within 30 days of the seat falling vacant. Parliament will consider his suggestion and set the final date.
It also wants the GEC to propose the budget for all by-elections to
Parliament. Since only two changes are proposed, the MP expects the law
to be passed by next week, after going through all the due process. The
second change proposed refers to the announcement of the date of a
by-election following the death of an MP. This is now done only after
50 days, at the end of the 49-day religious mourning period. The draft
wants this system to end.
