Mongolia And United Nations Print E-mail
Forty seven years passed since Mongolia joined the United Nations.
Mongolia strives for making through UN its contribution to the solution of urgent problems the international community is confronted with.

Since 2002, Mongolia has taken active part in the international community's efforts to maintain peace and security in the world. In 1996, Mongolia expressed its willingness to take part in UN peacekeeping operations; in 1999 the Government of Mongolia passed a resolution on participation in UN peacekeeping operations. The same year, the Government of Mongolia and UN concluded a memorandum of understanding on the contribution to the UN permanent peacekeeping forces system. In 2002, a law was passed by the State Great Khural on participation of servicemen in UN peacekeeping and other international operations. Since then, Mongolia has sent its military observers to UN peacekeeping missions.
Today, two Mongolian military observers are serving in Congo, three in West Sahara, two in Sudan, four in Eritrea, and one in Georgia.
Mongolia maintains a cooperation with UN and its specialized agencies as well as international financing and economic organizations that render assistance and support to Mongolia in achieving its development goals. UN aids and assistances have played prominent roles in laying the foundation of some national productions, developing the educational and health sectors, alleviating poverty, protecting environment and nature, ensuring the human security, and introducing information technologies. Since 1963, a total amount of aids UN and its specialized agencies have provided to Mongolia has exceeded USD 280 million. In September 2006, United Nations Development Assistance Framework was approved, under which Mongolia will receive approximately USD 25 million aid in five years to come.
Since joining the UN, Mongolia has been elected the General Assembly Deputy Chairman for seven times, and the rapporteur, deputy chairman, and chairman of major General Assembly committees--for 14 times. Mongolia is working as a deputy chairman of the 63rd session of the UN general Assembly that is hosting in New York these days.
Mongolia has hosted visits of UN Secretary-General three times--in 1977 by Kurt Waldheim, in 1987 by Javier Prez de Cullar, and in 2002 by Kofi Annan. Heads of major UN specialized organizations have also visited Mongolia. These visits lend great impetuses to advancing the Mongolian-UN cooperation.
