Public Figures Divided Over Batsukh's Resignation Print E-mail
The news of the Mongolbank President’s offer to resign has taken the political world by storm. The unexpectedness of the development has made it difficult for members of Parliament to take a stand.
The MPRP group in Parliament decided on Monday evening to accept his resignation, but this was only after an earlier meeting had ended inconclusively. The DP group is yet to finalize its decision.
We asked some people in public life their views on the issue.
MP A.Tleikhan (MPRP) felt this was “not the time” to change the President of the Central Bank. The Mongolian economy has been hit by the world financial crisis and continuity of public policy was imperative.
MP G.Bayarsaikhan (DP) agreed. He felt that the Mongolbank had taken several correct decisions and it would be unwise to replace its head at a time when more such policies have to be identified to tide over the crisis.
MP R.Rash (MPRP) said it was “a difficult issue”, but added that it was primarily A.Batsukh’s decision that he did not wish to continue in the position, and his view “has to be honored”.
MP L.Gundalai (DP) saw no reason to ask Batsukh to reconsider his decision. In his view the Mongolbank had been inept in its handling of the financial crisis, and it was the wrong policies favored by Batsukh that now finds the Mongolian market starved of money. “We have to find a better person, and find one immediately, who could manage the situation with more competence,” he felt.
His view was rebutted by D.Oyunjargal, Executive Director of Mongol Post Bank, who felt Batsukh “had done what he could” in the face of what was a global crisis. He saw merit in the policies the Central Bank has been pursuing that had succeeded in curbing inflation, and stabilizing the banking sector. “Unfortunately,” he said, “the problem had wider ramifications, and Batsukh should not be blamed for the country’s woes.” Calling his decision to resign “too sudden”, Oyunjargal was certain “it will be better if he continues in his present position”.
Sh.Chudanjii, Executive Director of Zoos Bank, declined to comment on the issue.
