Mongolia is the second biggest raw cashmere producer in the world after China. Mongolia prepares around 3,000 tons of cashmere per year, or just under 30% of the entire world market. Gobi Joint Stock Company, the largest Mongolian producer of cashmere
knitwear and accessories, yarn, fabrics and allied products was
established in 1981 with Japanese economic and technical assistance. On
Dec.8.2006, the Mongolian state’s 73.47 percent equity interest and
5,730,198 common shares of Gobi Cashmere were fully privatized by the
Japanese investor Toshisoke Investment Bank. The remaining 26.5 percent
is privately owned by 19,105 shareholders and traded on the Mongolian
Stock Exchange. There are five private shareholders who have more than
1 percent of the total share.
Gobi, which has 12 production departments and employs over 1600 workers, is a leading producer of cashmere products with the processing capacity that covers one third of domestic cashmere supplies. Presently, the company’s new management team is looking to modernize and expand the company’s processing facilities, and to introduce modern management and technological know-how to improve the competitiveness of the Mongolian cashmere industry in the world market. Gobi products are sold internationally through commercial contracts with 121 companies in 25 countries in Europe, Asia, and North America. 77 percent of Gobi’s total exports are to the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Italy, Belgium, Turkey, Switzerland Germany and the United States. Gobi is a major exporting company which obtains much revenue from selling cashmere to foreign markes. The Japanese owners of Gobi are planning to increase exports to Japan, leading many to believe hat sales revenue and finaicial resuls of Gobi will see healthy growth in the coming years.
