The Mongolian leather processing industry is directly dependent on herders as well as the meat-processing industry for raw material resources. Since Mongolia’s transition from a centralized-planning economy to a free market economy in the last decade, there have been many changes in the leather production market. Since 2000, small and medium enterprises with various processing capacities have overtaken large producers and form the majority of production today. Nonetheless, Mongol Savkhi has survived as one of the main leather producers in the country.
Presently, Mongolia has the capability to produce 7 million pieces of
leather and hide products annually, of which, 52.4% or 3.6 million
pieces are made of sheepskin, 26.2% or 1.8 million pieces are made of
goatskin, 7.1% or 0.4 million pieces are made of cowhide, 4.7% or 0.3
million pieces are made of horse hide, and 4.8% or 0.36 million pieces
are made of other animal skins. Nationwide, there are 66 leather and
hide processing plants, of which 71.2% are domestically managed.
However, they currently operate at a production capacity of 10-40%.
